Project Row Houses

Reclaiming a neighborhood is a transformative experience, and that’s exactly what artist and visionary Rick Lowe has done in the Third Ward. He took 22 shotgun houses from neglected pieces of local black history to places of art and inspiration which celebrate the African-American culture. These houses are now galleries, exhibition spaces, artists’ residences, transitional housing for those in need and a place where neighborhood latchkey children can congregate after school for a sense of community and a place to explore artistic expression. Some children have gone on from this program to prestigious colleges (including the Sorbonne in Paris) and Lowe continues to mentor the generations behind them.
