Historic Heights church saved in last-minute change of heart

Well, it won't be turned into a quirky Texas art museum, but Immanuel Lutheran church won't be demolished, either. Phew!

Swamplot is reporting that the congregation has committed to spending $150,000 to restore the historic building, which has been vacant since the 1980s. That's nearly twice the cost of demolition, but considerably less than the $600,000 estimated cost of renovation quoted in 2001.

The building will be used as "flex space" for church functions, Immanuel Lutheran School activities and community events.

The church was built in 1932 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It had been scheduled for demolition this summer.
