LEND A HAND, OR A HAMMER

Extreme Makeover sprints to finish: Morale is high, supplies are low

July 29th, 2010 at 5:04 PM

It was a much different picture Thursday afternoon at the site of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition's Houston build. Where an incomplete foundation lay Tuesday afternoon stood the framework of what appears to be a three-story house.

And although the crew put out a panicky call earlier in the day for more hands, more than 20 additional framers showed up at the Goodhope Street home to get the build back on schedule. If there was any stressing earlier in the day, we didn't see it.

Production crews doused each other with water guns while skilled workers finished up the framework — which was prefabricated in a warehouse. They are miracle workers, but they're not magicians.

I wondered how the neighbors were faring (the whole caboodle takes up several blocks of trailers and tents, and the surrounding streets are shut down) but was told they're enjoying some benefits of the Johnson family's windfall. Many nearby houses got new window units and the fronts of their homes refurbished by the huge crew.

Stress or no stress, the legions of cast, crew and volunteers have little more than a day to finish the entire project. Click here to volunteer or call 713-526-3060. The builders tell CultureMap they still need additional framers, professional painters, trim carpenters, and people to help out with cornices and stucco.

Stay tuned to CultureMap for more updates from the site.

Channel 13 — which broadcasts Extreme Makeover and  is posting extensive photo galleries of the build each day on its website — has put up its latest day four photos as well.

The builder still needs skilled help. Know what a cornice is? They want you.
